Why Are My Breasts Uneven?

Many women notice their breasts look slightly different from one another, whether it’s their size, shape, or position. This is a completely normal concern and does not necessarily indicate a health problem. In fact, it’s estimated that over half of women have asymmetric breasts. Fortunately, this uneven appearance is typically just a cosmetic concern.

Over the course of one’s lifetime, the breasts are known to change due to factors like puberty, trauma, or hormonal changes. This may lead to minor differences between each breast. Although breasts can naturally vary in size, significant differences in structure, especially those that change over time, may indicate an underlying issue such as a mass has developed. In these cases, mammograms and other breast imaging may be recommended to evaluate breast health.

For the majority of patients with healthy yet uneven breast tissue, surgical procedures are available to help correct this common concern. Breast reduction surgery can help reduce an overly large breast to mimic the shape of the other. Or, if an individual wants to enhance their overall breast size, saline or silicone breast implants can be used. As a more natural alternative, breast augmentation with fat grafting can create a more subtle increase in volume for the smaller breast.
